Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has survived a suspected bomb assassination attempt after addressing a Zanu-PF rally, in Bulawayo, the country’s second largest city.
“President Mnangagwa has not been injured and is at Bulawayo State House. Investigations are underway and more details will be given to the public.”
Top politicians have reportedly been injured including VP Kembo Mohadi, Oppah Muchinguri, Egelbert Rugeje, Mabel Chinomona and security details
The bomb blew off the staircase seconds after Mnangagwa had touched the ground, injuring several security aides and his deputy Kembo Mohadi.
“There have been multiple attempts on the President’s life over the past five years,” Presidential spokesperson George Charamba told the media.”
The extent of his injuries could not be established. Sources said about two aides were killed.
Former Minister Jonathan Moyo said “Today’s explosion at White City Stadium in Byo is a tragic reminder that the use of tanks, bombs, grenades and guns by whosoever against anyone to settle a political contest is barbaric.November 15, 2017 set a dangerous paradigm for politics in Zimbabwe. Mnangagwa survived a suspected food poisoning during a Zanu PF rally in Gwanda last year.
