Cairo: AFRICAN football chiefs have thrown weight behind underfire FIFA boss Gianni Infantino who faces charges of bad governance in the wake of damaging football leaks.
The leaders of Africa and Caribbean football zonal associations accused certain European press of “slandering” Infantino following the latest instalment of the so-called Football Leaks data.
The leaks have undermined the credibility of the FIFA boss Gianni Infantino, who promised to clean up football’s governing body on taking over from the discredited Sepp Blatter.
“….the Presidents of the Africa and Caribbean Zonal associations raise our voice against the actions of a certain European press aimed at denigrating and slandering the President and the administration of FIFA,” reads in part statement released on the side-lines of their meeting in Cairo on Tuesday.
“Faced with this scandalous campaign, we want through this message mark our distance vis-à-vis the abject behaviour and false allegations aiming at discrediting the achievements and positive changes introduced in football by President Gianni Infantino since his ascent to the top of FIFA. We will fight with the last energy this campaign of malicious denigration campaign.”
