Maputo: Floods in Mozambique have killed 15 people and destroyed 2,000 homes since October, says the director of the National Institute for Disaster Management (INCG).

The events associated with the 2018/2019 rainy season have also caused injuries to 54 people, total destruction of 522 houses and partially damaging 1,800 between October and December, said Augusta Maíta.

Most of the deaths and injuries occurred in the northern region of Mozambique.

For this rainy season, the Mozambican executive has approved a budget of 206 million meticais, but in total needs 1.1 billion meticais for disaster management.

The cooperation partners are providing support to INGC to cover the deficit, added Maíta.

On Thursday, the Mozambican government approved the orange alert to allow assistance to victims of natural disasters.
